Your workplace training program probably includes an online component of some sort. Most of us are connected to the internet at work and at home, through computers, smart phones, and wearable gadgets. We are almost constantly connected to the online world. So whether we know it or not, we are immersed in HTML.
HTML is the standard coding language used to create web pages. The first edition was early 1990s and has been updated periodically to incorporate new functionalities as the internet has evolved. The most recent version, HTML5, is the current best standard.
At this point, you’re probably wondering what this has to do with training your employees. Here’s the deal: HTML5 is a leap forward for your program’s functionality and portability. It is more flexible, easier to customize, and doesn’t need plug-ins like Flash that require updating and leave your network open to security vulnerabilities. It also uses much less bandwidth, which means courses load faster and play on multiple platforms: PC, laptop, tablets, and phones. It also supports the “BYOD” (Bring Your Own Device) trend, potentially saving the company hardware costs.
If you develop your courses in-house, you will find that most rapid eLearning authoring tools publish courses to HTML5. If you use an external vendor like UL, you will find an improved ability to bundle content, create full-length courses, mini-modules, and short course “snippets” to meet moment of need learning from a single source. HTML5 might be running in the background, but it will bring your eLearning program to the forefront.
